What makes teak “grade A”?
Grade is a commercial specification, not a government standard. “Grade A” describes furniture cut from the heartwood — the mature core of the jati log, dense and rich in the natural oils that resist weather and insects. Grade B uses outer or younger wood, carries more sapwood, colour variation and small knots, and suits indoor or painted pieces.
Both grades are kiln-dried. For export furniture the target is roughly 8-12% moisture content, which reduces movement once a piece reaches a drier climate. No official government source defines grade A versus grade B in law — the specs below are the commercial norms Jepara workshops and buyers actually use.

Heartwood’s density and oil content are why grade A is specified for those exposed positions — it holds up better than sapwood-heavy stock. Minimum order is a container that cubes out — usually a mixed 20ft or 40ft high-cube load rather than a fixed piece count. FOB loading is from Semarang / Tanjung Emas, with Surabaya or Jakarta available depending on the workshop.
Is grade A teak legal to export from Indonesia?
Yes, when the paperwork is in order. Teak and other plantation timber sit squarely within SVLK — Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu, Indonesia’s mandatory national timber-legality system, compulsory for timber-industry operators since January 2013. Timber exports have required a V-Legal Document since 1 January 2013, and since 1 January 2015 all wooden furniture except bamboo needs a V-Legal furniture export licence.
For EU buyers, Indonesia became the world’s first country to export FLEGT-licensed timber products, issuing FLEGT licences since November 2016; a FLEGT licence lets importers place goods on the EU market without further EUTR due-diligence.
One honest caveat on Europe: the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR, Regulation (EU) 2023/1115), adopted in 2023, adds requirements beyond legality — deforestation-free proof against a 31 December 2020 cut-off, plus geolocation and due-diligence statements. SVLK or FLEGT alone do not by themselves satisfy EUDR. With full application phasing in around the end of 2026, it becomes a 2027 buyer concern. We prepare documentation; acceptance always rests with customs and the competent authorities, and we never sell customs or EUDR certainty.
