Why source solid teak from Indonesia?
Indonesia grows the tropical teak (Tectona grandis, locally jati) that buyers treat as the durability benchmark for outdoor and heirloom indoor pieces. Central Java’s Jepara district is the country’s furniture hub, with generations of joinery skill in mortise-and-tenon frames, wide heartwood panels and hand-finishing.
Three things make Indonesia the default origin for importers and hospitality buyers: legal-wood traceability that satisfies EU and UK customs, kiln-dried stock at roughly 8-12% moisture content that ships without checking or warping, and workshop capacity to run custom or OEM private-label programs at container scale.
Grade matters, and it drives price more than any headline number. Grade A is dense golden heartwood with tight grain and high natural oil. Grade B carries more sapwood, colour variation and small sound knots, and quotes lower. Neither is “fake” jati — the right grade depends on whether you are furnishing a beachfront resort or a value retail line.
What legal-wood documents come with Indonesian teak?
Every legitimate teak exporter works inside SVLK — Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu, Indonesia’s mandatory national timber-legality system, compulsory for all timber-industry entities since January 2013. It traces wood from source through the supply chain to the port of loading.
Since 1 January 2013, timber exports must carry a V-Legal Document, and since 1 January 2015 all wooden furniture except bamboo requires a V-Legal / SVLK export licence. Teak and other plantation timber sit explicitly inside SVLK scope. Indonesia was also the first country in the world to issue FLEGT licences, from November 2016 — and a FLEGT-licensed shipment automatically meets the EU Timber Regulation, letting an EU importer place it on the market without separate due-diligence risk management.

One honest caveat on the newest layer: the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR, Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, adopted 2023) goes beyond legality. It requires goods to be deforestation-free against a cut-off of 31 December 2020, with geolocation and a due-diligence statement. SVLK or FLEGT alone do not by themselves prove EUDR compliance, and full application phases in around the end of 2026.
